It’s springtime in Tennessee and it’s time to get outside! We’ve compiled a list of places for you and your family to visit this year.
McNairy County specifically is home to Big Hill Pond State Park! We would love for you and your family to visit. Big Hill Pond is McNairy County’s best kept secret. There are miles and miles of trails. It seems like the park has added more acreage each time I visit. Explore McNairy (hi, it’s me) hosts events with Big Hill Pond - expect more fun stuff later this year. There’s an itinerary out for “Weekend in McNairy - Outdoorsy Girls Edition” if you’re interested in visiting our area!

Things to Do
Up the Creek Kayak - Olive Hill, TN
Float the Buffalo at the Buffalo River Resort or Crazy Horse!
Go paddling in places like Big Hill Pond State Park, Chickasaw State Park, Meeman Shelby Forest, Pickwick Landing State Park, and Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park.
Go Birding (it’s a thing and it’s fun) at Big Cypress Tree State Park! They have a nice paved trail and a boardwalk!
Go hiking at:
Big Hill Pond State Park - I am always happy to answer questions about this park and love going here! Perfect for intermediate trails. A lot of projects are in the works here - stop at the Visitor Center to see what is available during your visit!
Chickasaw State Park - super fun for kids and a great spot to go fishing!
Mousetail Landing - also very kid friendly with lots of short trails.
Pinson Mounds - very accessible with paved trails! It’s a beautiful park and extremely well kept.
Go horseback riding at:
Big Hill Pond State Park - byoh (bring your own horse)!
Chickasaw State Park - they have horses or you can also haul in your own.
Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park - no horses available here but you can haul your own in!
Natchez Trace State Park - Also BYOH - however, they have over 250 miles to ride on and have 15 stalls to rent.
Step back into History
Pinson Mounds State Park - go hiking and biking on their paved trails, explore the museum and local history, and enjoy educational events about Native History, the Bee Fest, and guided hikes!
Shiloh Military National Park - walk paved trails, view the eagles in their nest, visit the National Cemetery, and walk down to Pittsburg Landing to enjoy the views of the Tennessee River. There are events scattered all throughout the year and after you’re all finished up at Shiloh; eat dinner at Hagy’s Catfish Hotel or Top of the River!
West Tennessee gives plenty of opportunities to get outdoors from floating, kayaking, hiking, and even horseback riding or mountain (I know - we only have big hills but some days they feel like mountains!) biking.
Come check out McNairy County - slightly biased here- but don’t forget all of the other wonderful places in West Tennessee. We have a lot more to offer than you may initially realize! So, grab your bug spray, sunscreen, plenty of water, and leave no trace!
